A South African man who medics believed to have died in a motorcycle crash was found alive in the morgue when his shocked family came to identify his body.
Msizi Mkhize, 28, was walking home with a friend when he was hit by a vehicle in KwaMashu, a township in South Africa, not far from Durban.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and transferred to the Phoenix morgue.
There, he spent TWO DAYS in a fridge — despite still being alive.
When his family came to view the body, shocked staff discovered he still had a pulse.
Sadly, Mkhize, who was resuscitated by nurses, died five hours later.
“When his family arrived for identification purposes, a pulse was found in the patient by mortuary staff, who then immediately transported him to Mahatma Gandhi hospital for resuscitation,” said Imran Keeka, of the opposition Democratic Alliance party.
“What we want to know is what level of training did the staff have who declared him dead? What were the protocols?”
His father, Peter Mkhize, said: “I have no words to express how I feel about what happened to my child. To spend the entire night and morning in the mortuary refrigerator is wrong.”
The health department has launched an inquiry.
