The return of Democracy
May 29, 1999
On may 29,
1999 Chief Olusegun Aremu Obansanjo took oath of office as the first elected
president of the federal republic of Nigeria after the aborted 2nd
republic. General Abdulsalam Abubakar had earlier promise to hand over power to
a democratically elected president but Nigerians never took him serious and
when it actually happened the whole nation celebrated.
Agbani Darego wins miss World peagent
November 16, 2001
On Novenber 16 2001, a nineteen year old girl single handedly put
Nigeria on the world map by winning the 2001 Miss World pageant in South
Africa, beating 92 other girls and setting a world record as the first
black African Miss World. It was a day Nigerians openly celebrated and
every one felt proud to call themselves Nigerians
Assassination of Bola Ige
December 23,
2001.
On 23 December 2001, Bola Ige was shot dead at his home in the
south-western city of Ibadan by unknown gunmen, as at the time he was assassinated
he was a serving minister in the federal cabinet (Minister of justice) under
President Obasanjo
Ikeja bomb blast
January 27, 2002
The Lagos armoury explosion was the accidental
detonation of a large stock of military high explosives at a storage facility
in the city of Lagos,
Nigeria on 27 January 2002. The fires created by the debris from this explosion
burnt down a large section of Northern Lagos, and created a panic that spread
to other areas. As people fled the flames, many stumbled into a concealed canal
and were drowned. The explosion and its aftermath are believed to have killed
at least 1,100 people and displaced over 20,000, with many thousands injured or
homeless. The government of Nigeria launched an enquiry, which blamed the Nigerian
Army for failing to properly maintain the base, or to decommission it when
instructed to do so in 2001.
Bellview air disaster and death of first lady
October 22, 2005.
This is just another day Nigerians will never forget in a hurry. Nigerians returned from church on that fateful Sunday to the sad news of the crash of Bellview airline flight 210 killing all 117 on board and then another shocker when news filtered in that the first lady Chief Mrs Stella Obasanjo died in a Spanish hospital during a cosmetic procedure.
Sosoliso air disaster
December 10, 2005
Just 2 months after the crash of ill-fated Bellview flight 210 in Lisa another aircraft belonging to Sosoliso airlines crash landed in Port Harcourt and bursted into flames, 7 out of the 110 passengers on board survived initially but 4 later died in the hospital.
Dana air disaster
June 3, 2012
Dana Air Flight 992 was a scheduled domestic commercial passenger flight from Abuja to Lagos, Nigeria. On Sunday, 3 June 2012, the McDonnell Douglas MD-83
aircraft operating the flight crashed into a furniture works and
printing press building in the Iju-Ishaga neighbourhood of Lagos.The crash resulted in the deaths of all 153 people on board and 10 more on the ground.
Kidnap of Chibok girls
April 14, 2014
On the night of 14–15 April 2014, 276 female students were kidnapped from the Government Secondary School in the town of Chibok in Borno State, Nigeria. Responsibility for the kidnappings was claimed by Boko Haram, an Islamic Jihadist and terrorist organization based in northeast Nigeria. The female student who are to sit for the West African terminal examination as the the time of kidnap are still missing after one year in captivity.
The victory of President Buhari
March 28, 2015.
President Muhamadu Buhari who had contested 3 previous presidential elections in Nigeria, again contested againts the incumbent president Goodluck Jonathan and this time emerged victorious after a keenly contested election with a lot of intrigues.
After he was formerly declared winner by the electoral commission the whole counrty went into celebration mode.
