ONE of the most famous rappers on the planet is set to rock a students' union.

Multi-platinum artist Snoop Dogg – who has sold more than 35 million records worldwide – will be performing a DJ set at Keele University.

The rap star will take to the decks later this month as he morphs into one of his alter egos, DJ Snoopadelic.

"In some ways it was good luck, as he is appearing at the Y-Not festival in Matlock and the Kendal Calling Festival," he said.

"There is a degree of good fortune in getting an artist but, like they say, you make your own luck.

"I've been in the industry for over 20 years and a big part of it is getting the artists to want to work with you.

"We've built up a reputation for putting on world-class events and over the last few years have brought world-class underground artists you'd normally see at major events to the area."

Lee believes the region is often overlooked because of the bright lights of Manchester and Birmingham.

He added: "It's no-one's fault that Manchester and Birmingham happen to be on either side of the city. North Staffordshire has seen many major artists over the years, such as Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, Coldplay, Oasis and dozens of other household names, but rarely at the peak of their career.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime party for the area that you really don't want to miss. I'm a huge hip-hop fan and I am excited, although it will also be hard work."

The students' union has room for 1,100 revellers.

Bar and entertainment manager Dave Melville said: "In the past we've had Ed Sheeran here, and he said that some artists prefer to play in a smaller venue because of the intimacy and the fact you can engage with the crowd and feel the energy at these smaller gigs.

"A lot of artists perform gigs between festivals and it's great for those people who can't get to festivals at the weekends.

"Being situated between Birmingham and Manchester is a mixed blessing as we're between two major cities and we don't have anything like an O2 Arena so we sometimes get missed.

"But it can also work for us as we're only just down the road or up the road, depending on where you're coming from."
