Police need bribes to do their job - Murdered South Africa Goalie's Father

Remember Senzo Meyiwa, the South African goalie that was killed last year...His father spoke to a News24 reporter on Monday maintaining there's a conspiracy against finding his son's killers, he also accused the Police of expecting bribe before they can do their constitutional work of finding his son's killers.

Excerpts for the interview below:

"We are very busy today with family rituals. I have recalled some fond memories of my son and it hurts me that his killers have not yet been found."

Sam Meyiwa said he believed police were taking too long to find his son’s killers.

"It is very frustrating for me and the rest of the family. I don’t know what is happening with police in South Africa. I think over here they need [a] bribe for them to do their job." 

Meyiwa's father last week told City Press that the family could not afford to perform the ceremony for the late Bafana captain.

He said that to perform ukubuyisa (bringing back the spirit back to the family home), they needed to slaughter a cow and a goat, but could not afford R10 000 for a cow and R650 for a goat. 

"If I don’t do this ritual, my son is not going to rest in peace," an emotional Sam Meyiwa said. 

"Life is getting tougher every day. Sometimes we even go to bed with empty stomachs. Our lives have changed for the worse since Senzo has died. My son was a breadwinner. Why did they kill him?" he asked. 

Shaheen Suleiman, a private investigator who was hired by the Meyiwa family to investigate his death, said there has been "no progress" with the investigation into the death of the soccer star. 

National police spokesperson Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale said police were continuing investigations into the matter "on a daily basis".

"We have spoken to over 100 people, taking statements from each other. We have followed up on this information that has mostly seen police working between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. We have also spoken to those in the soccer fraternity. 

"There has also been certain pieces of material evidence from the crime scene that we are running DNA tests on."
