Nigeria seeks more UN support in Fight against Boko Haram

Nigeria's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Khadija Ibrahim, has called for stronger assistance from the United Nations (UN) in the fight against insurgency and the resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons in the northern part of the nation. He made the request at a meeting with the special envoy to the United Nations Secretary-General on West Africa, Mohammed Ibn-Chambas.

Ibrahim said the growing poverty, crime and violence in the region necessitated a lasting
reconstruction which the humanitarian gestures of the United Nations could help achieve.

In his response, the UN special envoy emphasised the need for displaced Nigerians to be resettled in their homes.

Ibn-Chambas said the UN would help in the reconstruction of infrastructure destroyed by the insurgents through its various agencies.

He also pointed out that it was time for stronger ties between the countries in the region affected by Boko Haram insurgency.

According to him, a stronger tie would help ensure the destruction of the insurgents’ operational infrastructure to bring an end to the security crisis.

Nigeria’s is making the request just as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps have become a target by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect.
