J.K. Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter’ writing seat is up for sale

Will you buy the chair J.K. Rowling sat on while she wrote the first two books in the award winning magical series "Harry Potter." If yes the not Magical chair that bored the magical book is now up for auction, with the latest bid sitting at $65,000.

The chair itself was, originally, nothing special. Rowling was given a set of four when she was living in public housing in Edinburgh, according to Heritage Auctions, which describes it as “a standard 1930s era oak chair with a replacement burlap seat decorated with a red thistle.” One of them was somewhat more accommodating than the others, so that’s the one she used.

“This was the comfiest one,” reads a signed note from Rowling that accompanies the chair, “which is why it ended up stationed permanently in front of my typewriter, supporting me while I typed out ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.’ ”

The chair has, however, been modified since Rowling obtained it. She hand painted the words “You may not / find me pretty / but don’t judge / on what you see” on it in rose and gold; she signed the back rest; and she noted that “I wrote / Harry Potter / while sitting / on this chair,” on it, among other updates.

Those changes were made to sweeten the deal for a 2002 charity auction. It sold in another auction, in which some proceeds went to another charity, in 2009.

The auction ends Wednesday.
