See who got nominated for the Chatham House Prize

Guess who made the list of nominees for the prestigious 2016 Chatham House Prize, Well he's no other than our very own Professor Attahiru Jega, the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Prof. Jega was nominated alongside the United States secretary of State, John Kerry who shared a joint nomination with Iran's foreign affairs minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif.

The duo of Christiana Figueres; executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention and Laurent Fabius; former prime minister of France are the third nominee.

According to the organisers of the award, Jega was nominated for ”his professionalism, determination and integrity as chairman of Nigeria’s electoral commission, which, in 2015, ensured the conduct of Nigeria’s most credible election since the country’s return to civilian rule in 1999.” 

They further noted that:”Professor Jega’s leadership also helped to defuse the significant potential for electoral violence in Africa’s most populous nation, which could have had far-reaching ramifications for the region.”

About the Award:

Also known as the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House is an independent policy institute based in London.

Founded in 1920, Chatham House engages governments, the private sector, civil society and its members in open debate and confidential discussion on the most significant developments in international affairs. 

Past winners of the Chatam House Prize includes former US first lady and presidential hopeful; Hilary Clinton, former president of Ghana; John Kuffor and Belinda Gates, wife of world’s richest man; Bill Gates.
