Nicole Dempsey, 37, was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s
Hospital in a critical condition following the incident but was
pronounced dead just before 5am
The mother-of-two, who's parents owned the Serves You Right Cafe, was managing the business while they were overases on holiday.
Ms
Dempsey bore the brunt of the explosion and was put on life support
after suffering burns to 80 per cent of her body and inhaling smoke in
the fire.
Her parents Vicki and Hans Nyholt rushed home from the Netherlands to be at her hospital bedside.
Her parents reportedly arrived in Brisbane on Thursday night.
The
Cairns Forensic Crash Unit is continuing its investigations into the
incident which occurred when a utility travelling on Grigg Street left
the roadway and struck a gas cylinder, causing the gas to explode around
12pm.
Twenty people were inside the premises at the time of the explosion.
The
driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 60-year-old Ravenshoe man,
along with 19 people at the scene were transported to various hospitals
for treatment.
Some residents said the explosion, which completely gutted the business, felt like an earthquake.
Police are investigating what caused the fiery and destructive explosion, which has devastated the small community of about 900.
There
are unconfirmed reports the man driving the four-wheel drive had a
heart attack before driving through the front of the building.
Witnesses reported hearing three huge bangs and seeing people running from the cafe on fire.
Support
services, including counselling, is still being offered to those
affected by the incident at the Ravenshoe Community Centre at 3 Bolton
Street, Ravenshoe.
