Information provided by Dubai Police led to the foiling of four cocaine smuggling attempts in the last two months.
A combined seven kilograms of cocaine were seized in the operations. The smuggling attempts, which originated from South America, were targeting two African cities and an Asian country.
Cooperation between Dubai Police’s anti-narcotics department and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) at the British Embassy, led to the arrest of the smugglers and the cocaine seizure. The cocaine confiscated from all four operations amounted to seven kilograms.
Colonel Eid Mohammad Thani Hareb, Director of the Anti-Narcotics Department, said: “The smugglers were caught red-handed in the Nigerian cities of Lagos and Abuja, and Istanbul, Turkey. Information provided by Dubai Police was vital to the arrests. The four suspects, three men and a woman, hid the narcotics in different places such as concealed pockets of suitcases, their clothes and even in their bowels.”
Col Hareb emphasised the importance of cooperation between international law enforcement agencies to foil such operations that “disrupt state security”.
Col Hareb called on the public to contact the anti-narcotics department at Dubai Airport to report any suspicious behaviour related to drug smuggling. People can contact the department via email dpan@dubaipolice.gov.ae or via their toll-free number 800400400.
